ATLANTICA

2.5 D Matte Painting Camera Projection

CONCEPT

Paying tribute to an old Disney favorite, this 2.5 D projected matte painting brings to life Atlantica, from The Little Mermaid. Painted from scratch in Photoshop then layered with some photographic elements, the painting is brought to life in Maya by projecting the painted layers on geometry and a slow animated camera. Atmosphere and particles were added in post.

BREAKDOWN

PHOTOSHOP LAYERS

MAYA GEOMETRY

Atlantica Maya geometry

Using a projection camera, the geometry is sculpted roughly to the matte painting. The background is projected onto a dome and the other Photoshop layers are projected onto the other corresponding pieces of geometry.

In the Hypershade, each Lambert shader for each piece of geometry has two projected 2D textures connected to it, one for the RGB layer and one for the alpha layer. The RGB texture is connected to the color and incandescence channels, and the alpha texture is connected to the transparency channel. By using the incandesence channel, no lights have to be used in the scene.
